What do you require from me?
The most important things I need from you are honesty, patience and consistency. Therapy works best when you can come at a regular time once or twice a week. Your commitment to these sessions can begin a process for ‘turning down pain’, addressing your issues and moving towards the life that you desire.
Does counselling work?
Yes, but it does not work in the same way for everyone. For some, relief is immediate and lasting; for others, it takes time. It is not usually a straight line of continual improvement – for most people, change is manifest in a steady progression of more good days and fewer bad days, until you feel better in yourself and you sense that your life is more satisfying. Often, you will feel you have reached a turning-point when you hear friends or family observe that you seem happier, more relaxed, more effective at work or simply that you are looking better. So, don’t despair if you feel sometimes that you slip backwards – keep at, it works!
How many sessions will I need?
Therapy could, in theory, go on for ever as there is always scope for improvement – no one is perfect! Generally, however, people know when they are at the point where they no longer need therapy. You may also, like many people, feel it is better to gradually reduced the frequency of sessions rather than come to an abrupt end.
I would advise you to come as long as you feel you need or want to – it’s your decision.
Is it confidential?
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance. It is the first thing we will discuss before starting any counselling.
